Riaz Islam

Neuromodulation therapies have brought great promises to people suffering neurologic disorders, spinal cord injury, stroke and amputation. Despite the clinical success of these devices their spatiotemporal mechanism of neural elements activation is not well understood. My goal is to apply two photon microscopy in transgenic mice models and combine with computational modeling to investigate mechanism of neuromodulation therapies and potentially propose more effective therapies.

 

Previous work: Before starting PhD, I worked at the Neural Engineering Lab, Mayo Clinic. Where I worked on developing epidural stimulation based therapies to restore motor function in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. We used rat model of SCI to develop novel therapies, then optimized them using a combination of computation model based on electrophysiology and kinematics, and large animal model experimentss, and finally we applied them in human subjects with complete SCI.
